Singapore’s New P-8A Aircraft to Enter Service in Early 2030s, Says Defence Minister
IDAHO, United States — Singapore’s four Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft are expected to enter service in the early 2030s, Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing said on Saturday (Sep 13).
Speaking at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho, during his first US visit as defence minister, Chan said the P-8As — set to replace the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s ageing Fokker-50s — mark the first phase of the SAF’s maritime security refresh.
Equipped with advanced sensors, radar and anti-submarine warfare systems, the aircraft will strengthen situational awareness and operational reach. Chan also highlighted Singapore’s acquisition of 20 F-35 fighter jets, with the first deliveries due in 2026. A new squadron will be based in Ebbing Air National Guard Base, Arkansas, enabling Singapore to train with international partners.
The minister also observed Exercise Forging Sabre, emphasising the SAF’s push to integrate drones with manned platforms.
