Malaysia Aviation Group Eyes Faster Boeing Deliveries Amid US-China Trade War Slot Opportunities

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is exploring the possibility of accelerating its Boeing aircraft acquisition due to delivery slots potentially vacated by Chinese carriers amid the US-China trade war. MAG is in talks with Boeing to secure earlier deliveries, though competition for these slots is intense. Any additional aircraft would be separate from MAG’s existing order of 25 leased aircraft from Air Lease Corporation, set for delivery between 2023 and 2026. To fund new acquisitions, MAG would need to raise capital. Key considerations include the aircraft’s production stage, cabin configuration, and compatibility with MAG’s requirements. MAG is also shifting its fleet strategy toward widebody aircraft by 2035 to meet growing demand in the Asia Pacific, particularly in congested Asean cities.
