In Terengganu, 76% of the population, or 988,000 out of 1.3 million people, are overweight or obese, a 15.2% rise from 60.8% in 2011, according to the State Health Department. One in three teenagers in the state faces weight issues due to unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles, exacerbated by gadget use and easy access to unhealthy food. This trend increases the risk of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease, kidney issues, and high blood pressure. To combat this, the department is intensifying public health initiatives, including the “War On Sugar” campaign, and promoting healthier habits like drinking plain water and cooking nutritious meals at home.
