Draft Trump $1 Coin Design Sparks Legal Debate Ahead of US Semiquincentennial
WASHINGTON – The US Treasury has unveiled a draft design for a US$1 coin featuring former president Donald Trump, proposed to commemorate America’s 250th independence anniversary in 2026. The design depicts Trump in profile with “Liberty” and “1776–2026,” while the reverse shows him with a clenched fist and the words “fight, fight, fight,” referencing his statement after surviving an assassination attempt.
While Treasury officials said the draft reflects “the enduring spirit of democracy,” legal experts questioned its validity. Federal law prohibits portraits of living individuals on commemorative coins, though interpretations differ between statutes governing paper money and coins. Critics argue the design could violate longstanding prohibitions, while supporters say it aligns with commemorative coin rules.
The debate recalls the 1976 bicentennial coin featuring the Liberty Bell and moon. Whether Trump’s image will appear on the official issue remains unresolved, with Treasury promising updates after the government shutdown ends.
