Greenland: War or Peaceful Annexation?
DAVOS, Switzerland – President Donald Trump arrived in the Swiss Alps amid heightened trans-Atlantic tensions over his push to acquire Greenland, sparking fears among European leaders of a potential conflict. In a major reversal during his address at the World Economic Forum, Trump explicitly ruled out using military force to gain control of the Danish territory, insisting the U.S. seeks it solely for security reasons and not mineral resources. He criticized Denmark as “ungrateful” for past American support during World War II and reiterated that only the U.S. can effectively defend Greenland.
Following an hour-long meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump announced he had secured the “framework of a future deal” regarding Greenland and the Arctic region. In a significant concession, he immediately called off threatened tariffs on several European nations. The developments marked a swift de-escalation after days of strained rhetoric, with Trump framing the outcome as a step toward stronger trans-Atlantic cooperation on strategic interests
