The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has selected U Mobile to implement Malaysia’s second 5G network, aiming to enhance connectivity and bring the advantages of 5G technology to the rakyat, industry, and nation. This decision follows MCMC’s in-depth assessment of technical, commercial, and strategic factors, designed to ensure that the network meets national priorities and supports diverse industry needs. As part of the agreement, the operator may collaborate with other mobile network operators (MNOs) to expand the 5G rollout, subject to MCMC’s further approval.
MCMC will maintain an active oversight role throughout the network’s development to ensure that U Mobile complies with all regulatory standards under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588). This supervision will help uphold the high standards expected for a project of this scale, ensuring that 5G deployment benefits from both regulatory and operational transparency. The agency emphasizes that the new 5G network will be instrumental in fostering innovation and advancing Malaysia’s digital economy.
