Dr Wee Ka Siong, MCA president and Ayer Hitam MP, has called for clear government guidelines on whether hawkers and small traders can use subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Speaking at the Ayer Hitam MCA annual general meeting on June 1, 2025, he highlighted confusion and panic among hawkers due to a Petronas directive from April 30, which banned the sale of subsidised 12kg and 14kg LPG cylinders to commercial premises, including food stalls. Dr Wee noted that the rule requiring a permit for using more than three 14kg cylinders, introduced during his time in Cabinet, was not enforced then but is now being strictly applied, causing distress among hawkers. Many hawkers keep extra cylinders to avoid supply disruptions, but as of May 1, they must use commercial 14kg cylinders priced at RM70 each. The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister stated that LPG subsidies cost RM3.4 billion, and premises using over 42kg of LPG need a permit under the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Act 2021, with Ops Gasak launched to curb misuse.
