Australia Unveils First “Ghost Shark”
Australia has entered a new phase of naval power with the rollout of its first “Ghost Shark” autonomous submarine. Built by US defence technology firm Anduril, the 5.8m vessel can perform long-range surveillance, reconnaissance and attack missions without a crew. The government has allocated $1.7 billion to produce dozens of Ghost Sharks at a new Sydney facility.
Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said the vessel could be launched from any wharf using a 40-foot container, enhancing Australia’s deterrence capacity. Defence Minister Richard Marles described the program as world-leading in autonomous underwater capability. The factory, spanning 7,400 square metres, is expected to create 150 skilled jobs and support 40 local suppliers. The first Ghost Shark will undergo undersea trials before delivery to the Royal Australian Navy in January, with full-scale production beginning in 2026.
