Bali’s Paradise Image Fades Amid Overtourism and Environmental Strain
Bali, long hailed as a tropical paradise, is facing growing disillusionment from tourists who say social media depictions differ starkly from reality. Visitors such as Zoe Rae, who left the island mid-trip, cite overcrowding, pollution, and unchecked development as eroding the island’s charm. While Instagram paints a picture of serene cafes and pristine beaches, the reality includes traffic jams, overflowing rubbish, and long queues at tourist spots.
The surge in tourism—expected to exceed seven million foreign visitors this year—has brought prosperity but also environmental strain, culminating in recent deadly floods worsened by poor waste management. Locals say Bali’s cultural richness and natural beauty remain, particularly outside crowded hotspots, but admit the island has changed. Advocates warn of a “catch-22,” as efforts to ease congestion by promoting new areas risk further overdevelopment. Many Balinese fear their island is being “eroded day by day.”
