Boeing Faces Renewed Scrutiny After Fatal Air India 787 Dreamliner Crash

NEW DELHI – The tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, has cast a dark shadow over Boeing, intensifying concerns about the aircraft manufacturer’s safety record. The flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, issued a “Mayday” call before crashing into a medical hostel, killing an unspecified number of students and leaving no apparent survivors, according to Ahmedabad police. This marks the first fatal incident involving a Dreamliner, previously lauded for its safety. Whistleblower allegations of production shortcuts, under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration since May 2024, have resurfaced, delaying 787 deliveries. Boeing’s stock plummeted 8% in premarket trading, and the crash, coming weeks after a $1.1 billion settlement over 737 MAX crashes, raises questions about manufacturing quality. Boeing stated it is gathering more information to support Air India.
