What Have We Done To Boost Industry 4.0?

Industry 4.0 is the term used to describe the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which involves the integration of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, robotics, and the Internet of Things into the manufacturing and related services sectors.

Malaysia has launched the Industry4WRD: National Policy on Industry 4.0 in 2018 to drive digital transformation of these sectors and boost productivity growth2.

The policy has three main objectives:

  1. to increase productivity
  2. create high-skilled jobs, and
  3. enhance innovation and technological capabilities.

Promotion of  Industry 4.0

Some of the measures that the government has taken to promote Industry 4.0 adoption in Malaysia include:

  1. Providing readiness assessments for companies to evaluate their current level of digitalisation and identify areas for improvement12.
  2. Offering financial incentives and grants for companies to invest in Industry 4.0 technologies and solutions.
  3. Developing human capital and talent through education, training, and reskilling programmes.
  4. Strengthening the ecosystem and infrastructure for Industry 4.0, such as broadband connectivity, cybersecurity, standards, and regulations.
  5. Fostering collaboration and partnerships among stakeholders, such as industry associations, academia, research institutions, and foreign investors23.

More on Challenges and Gaps in Industry 4.0

As discussed before, some of the challenges that Malaysia faces in catching up with Industry 4.0 include:

a. The lack of awareness and readiness among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies and solutions.

b. The high cost and complexity of implementing Industry 4.0 technologies and solutions, especially for SMEs with limited resources and capabilities.

c. The shortage of skilled workers and experts in Industry 4.0-related fields, such as data science, software engineering, and cybersecurity.

d. The need to balance between digitalisation and social responsibility, such as ensuring data privacy, ethical use of technology, and environmental sustainability.

Therefore, it will take a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including the government, industry players, academia, research institutions, and civil society, to overcome these challenges and accelerate Malaysia’s transition to Industry 4.0.
