Fujitsu and Hexagon Digital Twin Tech Aids Predictive Disaster and Traffic Safety Management

Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division and Fujitsu Limited have collaborated to develop digital twin applications aimed at predicting natural disasters and traffic accidents. The joint effort is part of their ongoing commitment to creating resilient, disaster-resistant cities, which stems from a business alliance established in June 2022.

For disaster mitigation, the partnership is working on a prediction model that calculates flooding extent and impact using precipitation data, offering visualizations of flooding and damage prediction analysis. This enables cities to formulate effective disaster response strategies. In terms of traffic safety, the collaboration has produced an application identifying accident-prone areas due to heavy traffic and road design, suggesting measures for improvement. The application empowers city planners to develop safer transportation networks.

Flood forecasting models

Fujitsu and Hexagon will conduct field trials with customers in administrative, municipal, and transportation sectors, aiming to globally launch the solutions by the end of fiscal 2023. The combined technology utilizes advanced flood forecasting models, precipitation data, and a ‘digital rehearsal’ approach to simulate disaster scenarios in detail. It aims to bolster disaster response planning, infrastructure protection, and safe evacuation routes during abnormal weather conditions.

The collaboration also focuses on reducing traffic accidents through an application that visualizes areas with high accident rates, analyzes causes, and provides solutions based on traffic volumes, road design, and other factors. This initiative aligns with the International Road Assessment Program’s Road Safety Toolkit.

Mladen Stojic, president of Hexagon’s Safety, Infrastructure & Geospatial division, emphasized the positive impact of the partnership on urban sustainability and liveability. Yoshinami Takahashi, SEVP of Fujitsu Limited, highlighted the collaborative effort’s contribution to addressing complex societal challenges.
