In Europe, the European Commission has launched the Future of Cities initiative, which supports 11 cities in developing and implementing solutions for environmental and social challenges, such as climate change, aging, mobility and social inclusion. Some of the cities involved are Helsinki, Copenhagen, Barcelona and Kitakyushu^1. The initiative also promotes knowledge exchange and collaboration among cities across Europe and beyond1.

In China, the government has announced plans to build a new “future city” on reclaimed land in the bay area of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. The city will use green technologies and innovation to create a carbon-neutral and resilient urban environment that can cope with future climate and health crises. The city will also feature a “sharing economy” that rethinks ownership and consumption patterns 2. China is also developing other “future city” projects in places like Shenzhen, Shanghai and Xiong’an 3.

In Japan, the government has been promoting the FutureCity Initiative since 2011, which aims to create cities that can solve the challenges of aging and the environment, while creating people-friendly values. The initiative has authorized 11 cities as “FutureCities”, such as Yokohama, Toyama and Kitakyushu 5. The initiative also encourages cooperation and learning among cities within Japan and abroad6. Japan is also investing in smart technologies and infrastructure to make its cities more efficient and sustainable7.

For example, Honolulu is transforming its energy system to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045. Atlanta is developing a comprehensive transportation plan that includes transit expansion, bike lanes and sidewalks.

Los Angeles is implementing a Green New Deal that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create green jobs and improve environmental justice. Boston is fostering innovation and entrepreneurship through its Innovation District and Startup Ecosystem.
