Heriot-Watt University Malaysia gathered industry and academia to discuss robotics, automation and AI, highlighting future-ready talent, lifelong learning and collaboration supporting Malaysia’s ambition to become an AI nation.
Heriot-Watt University Malaysia (HWUM) has reaffirmed its commitment to preparing graduates for the future of work by bringing together alumni, industry leaders and strategic partners to discuss the growing impact of robotics, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) on Malaysia’s workforce.
Held at Seri Negara in Tasik Perdana, the Networking Breakfast centred on the theme, “The Future of Work: Robotics, Automation, and Talent Development in Malaysia.” The event aligned with Malaysia Digital 2030 (MD2030) and the National AI Action Plan (2026-2030), which aim to position the country as an AI-driven nation by 2030.
HWUM Provost and CEO Professor Mushtak Al-Atabi said universities must produce graduates who are technically capable, adaptable and purpose-driven while maintaining strong human values. He stressed that employability remains central to the university’s mission as industries continue embracing advanced technologies.
PIKOM chairman and Glocomp Systems co-founder Alex Liew highlighted that robotics and automation are transforming sectors including manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, agriculture, energy and services. While digital literacy and technical expertise are increasingly essential, he said critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and emotional intelligence will distinguish future professionals.
Meanwhile, HWUM alumnus Datuk Seri (Dr) Michael Yam proposed establishing a Malaysian Robotarium in Putrajaya, modelled after the UK’s National Robotarium. The facility is envisioned as a public gallery, student learning hub and research and commercialisation centre to strengthen Malaysia’s robotics and AI ecosystem.
The programme concluded with a robot dog demonstration by the university’s Robotics Society, showcasing practical robotics applications and reinforcing the importance of industry-academia collaboration in developing future-ready talent across Malaysia.
