Najib Razak’s House Arrest Bid: A Setback for Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Battle
KUALA LUMPUR, 18 December 2025 – Lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah today demanded that former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak be immediately transferred to house arrest if the High Court rules in his favour on December 22 regarding an alleged royal addendum for home detention in the SRC International case.
Shafee argued that liberty cannot be stayed pending appeal, stating: “You cannot stay liberty. Liberty must be given.” He acknowledged practical arrangements like security might take a few days.
Najib, halfway through his reduced six-year sentence at Kajang Prison for misappropriating RM42 million, could be released in 2028 or 2029. Shafee cited existing prison regulations and precedents supporting house arrest.
The court will decide if the former King’s alleged add-on order is valid and enforceable.
