Loke: HSR will go on despite Japanese pullout

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook stated that the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail project will proceed despite some Japanese companies opting out of the request for information (RFI).

The Minister emphasized that numerous companies have expressed interest, and the project will not be halted due to the withdrawal of one party.

Loke on Japan’s pullout

“It is up to them (the firms). This does not mean we’ll halt the project just because one party is not interested as there are hundreds of others who have expressed interest (in the project).”

The deadline for the RFI is Monday, after which companies will be evaluated before the next step, the request for proposal (RSP).

It was reported that Japanese firms, including East Japan Railway Co, withdrew, possibly opening opportunities for Chinese businesses. The government aims to start negotiations with Singapore later this year.
