The Transport Ministry is considering introducing a new legal framework to regulate autonomous vehicles (AVs) as the technology progresses towards commercialisation. Transport Minister Anthony Loke highlighted the need for updated laws, especially concerning licensing and the integration of AVs in public transport and logistics sectors.
“Amendments to the law are definitely needed, for example, on licensing and how we allow AV buses on the road once the technology is ready for commercialisation and proven safe for public use,” says Loke.
Speaking after a 5G demonstration of an autonomous bus in Cyberjaya, Loke mentioned that while AVs are not yet mainstream, advancements could lead to fully autonomous public transportation in the future. The ministry is working with stakeholders to assess necessary legislative amendments, though no specific timeline has been set.
