Malaysia has banned single-use plastic bags in forest reserves, national/state parks, marine parks, Geoheritage sites, Geosites, and various business premises, including supermarkets and fast food restaurants, to curb plastic pollution. The decision, announced by the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, was made during the Mexcoe No. 1/2025 meeting in Putrajaya. Implementation will vary by state.
Additionally, federal and state governments will intensify efforts against illegal e-waste processing. The minister emphasized sustainable waste management to protect ecosystems and position Malaysia as a leader in global environmental efforts.
Key quote: “This ban on the use of single-use plastic carrier bags will also apply at fixed premises including supermarkets, convenience stores – including those at petrol stations – fast food restaurants, chain stores, pharmacies and other related premises.”
