MISC Berhad, in collaboration with South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), has achieved a key milestone in sustainable shipping with the Approval in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for their pioneering design of the world’s first ammonia-fuelled LR2 tanker. The vessel will be powered by Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) technology, supported by an integrated Ammonia Cracking System (ACS).
The AiP validates the technical feasibility and initial compliance of the design with global maritime rules and industry standards.
This development underscores both companies’ commitment to advancing decarbonisation in shipping, offering a scalable, cleaner alternative fuel solution that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
MISC and SHI’s initiative places them at the forefront of the maritime industry’s transition to low-carbon energy, aligning with global sustainability goals and future fuel mandates as the sector prepares for stricter emission regulations.
