The government is planning to replace the static Tun Sharifah Rodziah naval base in Semporna, Sabah, with a mobile forward operating base to enhance security operations along Sabah’s east coast. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin emphasized that this move aims to maintain strategic advantages and address ongoing threats, including terrorism, cross-border crimes like abductions, illegal fishing, and human trafficking. The base, Bernama said, has been effective in reducing abductions and intrusions, and coastal security will be further strengthened with an expanded radar network. The government has invested over RM500 million in military camps in Sabah, but issues with delayed projects, such as the RM77 million military housing project at Kem Kukusan, have led to the termination of the contractor.
