Malaysia is intensifying efforts to explore nuclear energy as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang.
He said nuclear power offers a cleaner, more stable baseload energy option with predictable fuel costs, helping hedge against fossil fuel price fluctuations. A pre-feasibility study conducted last year confirmed that nuclear energy is technically viable and holds strong potential for Malaysia’s power needs.
Six technical task forces have been proposed, focusing on technology development, nuclear competence, and regulatory frameworks. Amendments to the Atomic Energy Act were also passed to align with international nuclear safety standards.
Chang stressed that safety, seismic risks, and environmental impacts will be thoroughly assessed, with public consultation and transparency prioritised in site selection and planning.
