Penang Port Clarifies PRTU Development, Says Safety and Transparency Prioritised

Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) has clarified issues surrounding ongoing development works at Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda (PRTU), George Town, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, public safety and regulatory compliance. PPSB said the area is being developed in phases as part of long-term port planning to enhance land value, economic activity and public facilities.

Addressing claims of inadequate consultation, PPSB said an engagement session was held with tenants on Dec 29, 2025, resulting in agreement for them to vacate temporarily, with priority re-rental after upgrades. On regulatory concerns, PPSB said the developer is in the process of securing approvals from Penang Island City Council, which are being closely monitored. It added that no hazardous works are currently underway and public access remains unaffected. The project is expected to be completed within eight months, subject to approvals.
