MACC Freezes RM70mil in Bank Accounts in Major Tyre Smuggling Crackdown
PETALING JAYA, Oct. 9 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has frozen 16 company accounts and 25 individual bank accounts worth about RM70 million following raids on a tyre smuggling and import-export document forgery syndicate on September 29.
The coordinated operation, known as Op Grip, was conducted by the MACC’s Special Operations Division in collaboration with the Customs Department, Inland Revenue Board, and Bank Negara Malaysia.
Initial investigations identified two companies as key players, using methods such as purchases from unlicensed dealers and barcode tampering on new tyres. Four immovable assets worth about RM13 million were also seized, though no arrests have been made so far.
MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention) Azmi Kamaruzaman said a governance investigation paper has been opened into the procurement of unregistered tyres suspected to involve smuggling elements.
