The East Coast Economic Region Development Council (ECERDC) has unveiled significant developments from the recent Implementation and Coordination Committee (ICC) meeting in Johor, positioning Mersing and Segamat as key players in Malaysia’s ‘Food Basket’ initiative. These efforts are part of a broader plan to enhance food security and stimulate economic growth in the region.
Mersing is set to become a hub for dairy and fisheries, driven by flagship projects such as the Jemaluang Dairy Valley (JDV) and the Endau Mersing Fish Processing Park (EMFPP). The JDV is expected to produce 7.1 million litres of milk annually, housing 3,200 dairy cattle and attracting RM80 million in private investments over the next five years. This project is central to strengthening Johor’s dairy industry and meeting the growing local demand for fresh milk.
The EMFPP, meanwhile, focuses on frozen fish processing and cold storage, bringing substantial investments that will boost employment and support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). These initiatives align with Johor’s food security agenda and aim to create sustainable income opportunities.
In Segamat, the chili fertigation project introduces modern farming technologies, empowering the B40 community and promoting sustainable agriculture. These agricultural projects are designed to position Johor as a vital contributor to Malaysia’s food supply chain while fostering economic development.
Additionally, ECERDC is spearheading eco-tourism development through its Strategic Master Plan for Island Development in Mersing, targeting six key islands. This initiative aims to enhance tourism, create jobs, and preserve the natural ecosystem, contributing to Johor’s overall economic growth.
The Johor Menteri Besar, YAB Dato’ Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi, emphasized the importance of these projects for boosting the region’s food production and generating employment, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable growth. Through these integrated efforts, ECERDC is solidifying Johor’s role as a key player in both the agricultural and eco-tourism sectors of Malaysia.
