universally cool
A groundbreaking psychology study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General surveyed nearly 6,000 participants across diverse countries—including the US, China, South Korea, Germany, India, South Africa, and Chile—from 2018 to 2022. Researchers asked people to rate personalities of those they viewed as “cool” versus “not cool” or simply “good.” Surprisingly, perceptions of coolness aligned remarkably across Eastern and Western cultures, suggesting globalization—through music, film, and fashion—has standardized the concept. While “good” people were seen as warm, conscientious, and traditional, “cool” individuals stood out for edgier, change-driving qualities.
Examples of perceived “cool” icons include stylish performers like Pedro Pascal and Prince, who embody charisma and boundary-pushing flair.
Researchers note these traits help explain coolness’s role in driving innovation and cultural shifts, distinct from moral “goodness.”
