KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — High-income earners were the main contributors to Malaysia’s RM37.77 billion individual income tax revenue in 2023, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim told Parliament. Those earning over RM100,000 a year accounted for 86% of the total, while the top 20% of taxpayers — with taxable income above RM1 million — contributed one-fifth. Anwar said the government valued their role in strengthening the fiscal position and was tackling tax leakages involving undeclared assets, offshore income, and online businesses. Efforts include digitalising tax administration and enhancing fairness in Malaysia’s progressive tax system.
