Everyday Glitches Make KL Public Transport Feel Fragile: Khazanah
Public transport in Greater Kuala Lumpur isn’t collapsing, but frequent minor hiccups are making it increasingly unreliable for daily users, according to Phase 1 of the Greater Kuala Lumpur Mobilities (GKLMOB) study by Khazanah Research Institute (KRI). Through commuter interviews, performance data and spatial analysis, researchers found that while many prefer transit over driving, unpredictable delays, absent buses, poor disruption updates and inconsistent waiting facilities create ongoing uncertainty.
A new Bus Performance Index highlights early departures and irregular schedules as key trust-breakers. Bus stop quality varies widely, impacting comfort and safety perceptions. KRI recommends better real-time info, stricter operations, upgraded infrastructure and tailored first/last-mile solutions. The study from Khazanah stresses fixing everyday issues over just expanding networks.
