Malaysia has nearly 900 registered hotels as of June, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said Kuala Lumpur tops the list with 129 hotels, followed by Selangor (88), Penang (84), Johor (74), and Melaka (68). Putrajaya and Perlis recorded the fewest, with just eight hotels each.
Nga also revealed that the Town and Country Planning Department (PlanMalaysia) has drafted new guidelines for short-term rental accommodations (STRA). The proposal, prepared jointly with the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac), will be presented to the Cabinet.
The guidelines seek to address issues such as noise complaints, unregistered operators, and service standards. STRA hosts will be required to register with the Companies Commission, obtain local authority permits, secure insurance, and register with Motac once approved. The move aims to ensure fair competition and align STRAs with the hotel industry.
