MITI Reviews Reciprocal Trade Agreement with US Over Sovereignty

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 — The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) is conducting a comprehensive review of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) with the United States. The assessment, carried out with relevant ministries and agencies, focuses on tariff reductions, market access, and provisions that may affect Malaysia’s sovereignty, trade policy, and industrial development.

Trade Agreement

MITI emphasized that the evaluation must align with Malaysia’s neutral and non-aligned stance, as well as commitments under the United Nations Charter, the World Trade Organisation, and existing free trade agreements. Findings will be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration, taking into account economic security, diplomatic relations, and legal implications.

Exports to the US are projected to rise 17.2 per cent to RM233.1 billion in 2025, reflecting strong trade growth.
