When Rivers Run Rivalry: The World’s Quiet Water Wars

Water is increasingly a driver of conflict. Rivers and aquifers once seen as inexhaustible are now strategic assets or battlegrounds. In the Nile basin, Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has faced strong resistance from Egypt, which sees the river as vital to its agriculture and identity. In South Asia, China’s control of the Brahmaputra headwaters raises concerns downstream in India.

Low-intensity water clashes are routine. Iran and Afghanistan have skirmished over the Helmand and Harirud. In drought-hit East Africa, disputes over wells and grazing are frequent. Climate change increases scarcity and turns infrastructure into leverage. Water has become power.
