RON95 petrol subsidy reforms may start soon, saving RM4 billion annually, amid rising fiscal pressures and increased enforcement against misappropriation and smuggling
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 — Malaysians eligible for the targeted RON95 petrol subsidy will soon be able to access it through multiple payment mechanisms, not just the MyKad.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali assured the public that the system is designed for convenience, using existing apps such as Petronas’ Setel and Shell’s Shell App, as well as indoor and outdoor payment terminals at petrol stations. “Consumers can access the subsidy more easily and quickly… the process will run smoothly without long queues,” he said, adding that the Ministry of Finance will announce full details soon.
However, former MP Tony Pua has voiced concerns over using MyKad as the main method, warning it could expose the public to security and financial risks. “If you misplace your MyKad, you will be fined, and if you misplace it multiple times, the penalty could reach RM1,000,” he told Malaysiakini. Pua suggested reviving Pakatan Harapan’s proposed “Kad 95” scheme instead, to reduce risks and avoid costly infrastructure changes.
Meanwhile, petrol station workers briefed on the system revealed that Touch ‘n Go (TnG) e-wallet will also feature a special “Budi Madani RON95” icon, allowing purchases even if users forget their MyKad. The system, set to roll out by the end of September, will track quotas of about 100 litres per month for each eligible motorist. Once the quota is used up, motorists will pay the full market price.
Staff training is under way to ensure a smooth transition.
