Starbucks is facing legal action in California, Colorado, and Illinois after employees alleged the company’s new dress code forces them to buy work attire without reimbursement. With support from the union organizing its workers, three employees filed class-action lawsuits in Illinois and Colorado on Sept. 17 and submitted complaints in California.
The coffee giant’s updated dress code, implemented in May, requires workers to wear solid black shirts beneath their green aprons. Plaintiffs argue the policy violates state labor laws that mandate employers reimburse staff for job-related expenses. Attorneys for the employees said Starbucks denied multiple reimbursement requests, prompting legal escalation.
