Takaichi and Trump Forge Rare Earths Pact in NEW 'Golden Age' for Japan
TOKYO — Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pledged to usher in a “golden age” of Japan-US relations during talks with US President Donald Trump in Tokyo. Both leaders signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in the mining and processing of rare earths and critical minerals, amid rising tensions following China’s export restrictions on the materials.
The deal aims to bolster both nations’ supply chain resilience for key industries such as defence, automotive, and electronics. Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening Japan’s defence posture and expressed admiration for Trump’s previous peace initiatives.
The two leaders also discussed trade and security issues, agreeing to deepen economic ties through coordinated investment and policy measures. Takaichi, a protégé of the late Shinzo Abe, emphasised continuity in Tokyo’s alliance with Washington, calling it “the greatest alliance in the world.”
Later, aboard the USS George Washington, Trump praised Japan’s contributions to regional security while welcoming increased Japanese purchases of US-made defence equipment. Takaichi pledged that Japan would play a more active role in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
