UNIQLO and Universiti Malaya have formed a strategic partnership introducing an internship program tailored for students in UM’s Faculty of Business & Economics. This collaboration marks UNIQLO’s first tie-up with a Malaysian university, aiming to nurture skilled business leaders in the retail sector.
The internship spans 12 weeks, involving four weeks at UNIQLO’s head office and eight weeks in stores, providing practical retail industry exposure. Exceptional performers get a chance for a two-week stint in UNIQLO Japan to broaden their expertise.
Aligned with UNIQLO’s sustainability pillars, especially its focus on people, this partnership emphasizes diversity, equal opportunities, and career growth. Aligned with Malaysia’s Education Blueprint, it targets industry-relevant skill development.
This collaboration bridges academia and industry, leveraging UNIQLO’s expertise and UM’s academic resources. UNIQLO offers internships to final semester students meeting criteria, while UM actively promotes the program.
The MoU also aims to establish a UNIQLO Manager Candidate (UMC) pipeline, promoting diversity and providing interns with bonuses, medical coverage, and specialized training. This initiative spans 24 months, intending to shape students into store managers and future global leaders in the retail sector.
“It is a privilege to have a global industry player like UNIQLO to be one of our important partners. With its extensive history in the retail industry as a global apparel company, UNIQLO brings invaluable expertise to the table. As Malaysia’s premier university, UM continues to leverage its strengths to forge new collaborations, ensuring our position at the forefront,” states Dean Faculty of Business & Economics of Universiti Malaya, Professor Dr. Yusniza Kamarulzaman.
