Eight people are feared dead after a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base during a routine test mission.
A U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bomber crashed shortly after taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in California on Monday morning, with officials indicating that all eight people aboard are believed to have died.
According to a statement from the air base, the aircraft departed at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time on what was described as a routine test mission. Moments after takeoff, the bomber crashed within the vicinity of the base. Emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene and continued recovery operations throughout the day.
Base officials said initial assessments suggest the accident was not survivable, though the identities of those on board have not yet been released pending notification of family members. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Images and video circulating on social media, as well as footage aired by news outlets, showed a large plume of black smoke rising from the area of the crash.
The B-52 Stratofortress, developed by Boeing, has served as a cornerstone of the U.S. Air Force’s long-range strike capability since the 1950s. Capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons, the aircraft remains in active service, with the Air Force planning to operate the fleet through at least 2050.
The incident marks a significant loss as investigators work to determine what caused the crash.
