Malaysia’s Domestic Tourism Surges in 2024 with RM106.7bil in Spending

Malaysia’s domestic tourism sector saw robust growth in 2024, with domestic visitor expenditure rising 25.6% to RM106.7 billion from RM84.9 billion in 2023, according to the Statistics Department of Malaysia. Domestic visitor numbers increased by 21.7% to 260.1 million, driven by seasonal events like Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. Shopping accounted for 37.4% of spending, followed by food and beverages (16.2%). Selangor led as the most visited state with 34.5 million visitors. Most tourists stayed with relatives (60.4%) and used land transport (97.6%), while homestay usage grew to 8.6%.
