Malaysia Tests 5G Broadcast to Boost Connectivity, Safety and Future Digital Broadcasting
PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia is exploring the potential of 5G Broadcast technology, with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) conducting test-bed sessions to evaluate its impact on broadcasting and public safety.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the trials covered broadcasting services, emergency alerts, public announcements, and venue casting in sports and entertainment. Unlike conventional streaming, 5G Broadcast delivers TV and radio directly to devices without SIM cards, mobile data or WiFi, ensuring smooth access even in crowded or remote areas.
Fahmi said the technology, still under trial in Europe, could transform Malaysia’s digital broadcasting ecosystem, improve emergency communication, and expand access to underserved communities. However, commercial adoption may only arrive between 2027 and 2030 as compatible chipsets enter new smartphones.
He noted that venue casting features could enhance live experiences by offering spectators multiple camera angles, behind-the-scenes content, and congestion-free streaming.
