TANJONG MALIM, Sept 5, 2025 – PROTON today launched Malaysia’s first assembly plant dedicated exclusively to electric vehicles (EVs) at its Tanjong Malim facility, marking a major milestone in the country’s automotive industry.
Built within the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV), the plant begins full-scale operations this month, just seven months after its groundbreaking ceremony. The facility represents the first purpose-built EV assembly line in Malaysia, designed with scalability to meet growing demand in both domestic and regional markets.
The plant will initially produce the Proton e.MAS 7, the nation’s first mass-market EV launched last year, followed by the upcoming Proton e.MAS 5. Through PROTON’s partnership with Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd, other premium EV brands including Zeekr will also be assembled locally.
Occupying a 5.57-acre site, the facility was developed at a cost of RM82 million, with the first RM47 million phase now operational. This phase supports annual production of 20,000 units, with capacity expandable to 45,000 units.
Equipped with automated systems and specialized production lines, the plant incorporates advanced equipment such as tyre manipulator chassis lines, rear sub-assembly lines, sunroof manipulators, and EV electrical testing systems. A combination of automation and skilled operators ensures both precision and efficiency in output.
The project has already added 30 trained staff for critical roles, with more than 200 jobs expected as production scales.
